READ, COMMENT AND SHARE – How USAID Funds America’s Enemies with Taxpayers’ Money
Senator John Kennedy’s revelation about the misuse of funds by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has exposed a scandal that should outrage every American taxpayer. Hard-earned American dollars are being used to finance groups and governments that undermine free speech, promote political persecution, and push radical ideologies that run counter to the country’s own interests.
In a recent report, Kennedy demonstrated that billions of dollars from USAID have been directed to organizations aligned with agendas hostile to the United States and its core values. Some of the cases highlighted by the senator include:
- $50 million to the Colombian government: Instead of strengthening democratic institutions and fighting drug trafficking, these funds have been used to support NGOs that back leftist groups aligned with authoritarian regimes in Latin America.
- $37 million to Lebanon: According to independent investigations, some of this money ended up benefiting entities linked to Hezbollah, a group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.
- $20 million to Tunisia: Officially intended to promote democracy, but largely funneled to groups that restrict press freedom and criminalize political opposition.
- $10 million for woke activism in Asian countries: Projects aimed at spreading identity-based ideologies, often in societies that reject such agendas, causing instability and backfiring against American influence.
- $15 million to Ecuador: Supposedly allocated to strengthen democratic governance, but in reality, it funded groups linked to violent protests against the government and pro-market economic reforms.
- $12 million to Bolivia: Part of this money was directed to organizations that support the Movement for Socialism (MAS), the party of former president Evo Morales, helping sustain his political influence and weaken the opposition.
- $30 million to Haiti: Amid the country’s political and economic chaos, much of these resources ended up in the hands of NGOs suspected of collaborating with armed gangs, deepening the crisis instead of solving it.
- $25 million to Argentina: Officially earmarked for social development but used to subsidize militant groups tied to far-left sectors, weakening the middle class and the productive economy.
The senator’s criticism goes beyond the exorbitant misallocation of funds; it strikes at the complete inversion of values these allocations represent. Instead of strengthening strategic allies and defending the principles of freedom and democracy, USAID has been financing movements that erode these pillars.
Kennedy was emphatic in stating that this practice is an insult to the American worker, who pays taxes believing their money will be used to strengthen their nation, not to subsidize its enemies. He also pointed out that this irresponsible policy not only compromises the U.S.’s global position but also poses a national security risk by empowering groups that challenge Western interests.
Additionally, figures like Elon Musk and President Donald Trump have voiced support for dismantling USAID or, at the very least, drastically reforming the agency. To them, it is unacceptable for a government institution to fund organizations that act against the interests of the United States.
The response to this scandal must be swift and decisive. Congress should launch thorough investigations and implement strict regulations on USAID’s fund allocations. American taxpayers deserve transparency and accountability in how their money is spent, and any policy that prioritizes destructive ideologies or indirectly funds oppressive regimes must be immediately abolished.
The case exposed by Senator Kennedy serves as a warning to all who still believe that American tax dollars should be used to benefit the United States and its allies—not to strengthen those who seek to undermine them. If this policy continues unchecked, America’s role as a global leader will be compromised—with its own money funding its downfall.
